FAQ

COMMON QUESTIONS
Do my files stay on my computer?

Yes. Tools that work with audio, like Auto Mapper, Drumpad 16 or Sample Harvester, load your files straight into the browser. Nothing is uploaded, and all processing happens on your machine.

The only files that leave a tool are the ones you export, and those are saved to your own computer.

Is this really free?

Yes. Every tool on this page is free to use, with no account, no licence key and no trial period.

There is a paid supporter pack, but nothing on this page is cut down to sell it — these are the full versions. The pack adds offline copies of everything, 25 impulse responses, extra Fossil datasets, and three tools that ship only there: Macro Lab Plus, Drum Engine and Sample Forge.

Can I use the tools offline?

Not from this page — it needs to load. Offline copies are in the supporter pack on itch.io: unzip it and the tools run from your own drive, with no internet and no dependency on this site staying up.

Do the offline tools need installing or a local server?

No. Each tool is a single self-contained file — unzip the pack, open the tool in your browser and it runs. MIDI works straight from the folder too, so there is nothing to install and no command line involved.

What do I need to run the tools?

A current desktop browser, nothing to install. Chrome, Edge and Brave run every tool. Firefox runs the MIDI tools too, after a one-time permission prompt. Safari has no MIDI support, so use it only for the audio and calculator tools.

What do I need for the MIDI tools?

A browser with MIDI support (see above) and something to talk to: a synth or controller with USB MIDI, a MIDI interface, or your DAW through a virtual MIDI port. The first time a tool asks for MIDI access, allow it in the browser prompt.

Do the sequencers make sound?

No. The sequencers send MIDI notes and controller data. Route that to a hardware synth or a software instrument in your DAW to hear it.

The synths are the exception — Paper Nest and Ambient Engine make sound themselves.

What can I do with the MIDI tools?

Generate patterns for hardware synths or DAW tracks, watch incoming MIDI message by message (MIDI Monitor), store and resend SysEx patch dumps (SysEx Librarian), build your own control surface (Control Forge), or check that every knob and key on a controller sends what it should (Controller Test Bench).

How do I connect the tools to my DAW or hardware?

Hardware synths: connect them by USB or through a MIDI interface. Once you allow MIDI access, the browser lists them as MIDI outputs.

Your DAW: you need a virtual MIDI port between the browser and the DAW. On macOS, enable the built-in IAC Driver in Audio MIDI Setup. On Windows, install a free virtual port such as loopMIDI. Then pick that port as the output in the tool and as the MIDI input in your DAW.

Does this work on mobile?

The tools are designed for desktop screens. iPhone and iPad browsers have no MIDI support, so the MIDI tools won't work there.

SUPPORTER PACK

OPTIONAL · ONE PAYMENT · ITCH.IO

Almost everything here is free and stays that way — no accounts, no trial timers, nothing switched off after a week. Three tools live in the supporter pack instead. That’s what keeps the rest of the tools free.

CB MACRO LAB PLUS

A full synth playground in the browser — all 20 modulation algorithms, with MIDI out.

CB DRUM ENGINE

Eight synthesis voices across four engines — analog, noise, FM and modal — plus a sample layer for your own WAVs. Played from the keyboard or MIDI hardware.

CB SAMPLE FORGE

Auto Mapper and UI Editor combined into one preset builder — map the samples and design the panel in a single pass, instead of moving a folder between two tools.

CB IR SET

25 impulse responses sampled from hardware units in my own studio: halls, plates, gated and modulated spaces, tape delays. Drop them into any convolution reverb in your DAW.

CB FOSSIL DATASETS

10 additional CSV datasets beyond the ones bundled with the browser version — more material to drive patterns from.

THE PACK ALSO INCLUDES EVERY TOOL ON THIS SITE AS AN OFFLINE COPY — each one a self-contained file that runs from your own drive. Unzip, open it in your browser, done. No install, no build step, no local server, and MIDI works straight from the folder.

ABOUT

I am a sound designer in Munich. Many of these tools started as scripts for my own work — sampling hardware synths, mapping libraries, talking to the gear on my desk — and moved into the browser so I could share them. Others, like the sequencers, were built for this site.

Everything runs in the browser, on your machine, next to the hardware on your desk.
